Elfa is the wall-mounted closet system sold by The Container Store: a steel top track on the wall, standards hanging from it, and shelves, rods and drawers that clip on wherever you want them. It is well made, easy to change later and backed by a 10-year guarantee, but it costs several times more than basic wire kits. It suits people who will keep the closet for years and want drawers inside it. If you only need a shelf and a rod, it is more system than you need.
This review covers how Elfa works, what drives the price, the build quality, the design and install process, and who should buy something else. It is based on Elfa’s and The Container Store’s published information and on what owners commonly report. Neither company sponsors ClosetBlueprint, and we have not tested Elfa ourselves.

How the Elfa system works
Every Elfa layout starts with a horizontal top track screwed into the wall near the ceiling. Vertical hanging standards hook onto that track and hang down the wall. Brackets click into the slots on the standards, and the brackets hold shelves, hanging rods, shoe racks and baskets. Drawers sit in drawer frames that either stand on the floor or hang from the standards.
The track is the only part that carries the screws into the wall. Everything below it hangs, which is why you can raise a shelf or add a second rod in a few minutes without tools. It also means one well-installed track can carry a full wall of clothes, as long as it goes into studs or proper anchors.
Elfa comes in two main lines:
- Elfa Classic is the original system, sold in the US by The Container Store since 1978. White or platinum steel, ventilated wire or solid shelves, mesh drawers. It is the part of the range most people mean when they say “Elfa.”
- Décor+ uses the same track and standards but adds wood-look shelves, solid drawer fronts, trim and hardware in several finishes. It replaced the older Elfa Décor line in 2024, so if you are extending an older Décor closet, check which parts are still sold before you plan.
The Container Store also sells other custom closet lines, such as Avera, that are built differently. This review covers Elfa only.
What an Elfa closet costs
Elfa is priced by the part, so the total depends on your wall widths and what you put on them. Published listings give a sense of the spread: House Digest reported Container Store Elfa prices from about $404 to $3,360 across its pre-designed closets. Expect a simple reach-in with shelves and rods near the bottom of that range and a walk-in with drawers and Décor+ finishes near the top, or beyond it. Check current prices on containerstore.com, because they change with sales.
What drives the price
| Choice | Effect on cost | How to keep it down |
|---|---|---|
| Wall length | More track, standards and shelves | Use the full width only where you hang or fold clothes |
| Drawers | The biggest single cost: frame, runners and each drawer | Start with one stack of 3–4 drawers and add later |
| Shelf type | Solid and wood-look shelves cost more than ventilated wire | Use wire up high, where nobody sees the shelf |
| Décor+ finishes | Fronts, trim and wood-look parts add a premium | Mix Classic parts on side walls and Décor+ on the main wall |
| Accessories | Shoe racks, valet rods, pull-out baskets add up fast | Buy the frame first, add accessories once you know what you use |
| Installation service | A separate paid line on the quote | DIY if you are comfortable with a drill and a level |
Buy during a sale
The Container Store runs Elfa sales several times a year. In recent years those have been around 30% to 35% off Elfa, often with exclusions. The cost of an Elfa closet changes a lot depending on when you buy, so the practical move is to design the closet first, save the design, and order when the next sale starts.
A worked example
Take a 6-foot (72-inch) reach-in where you want double hanging on the left, long hanging in the middle and shelves plus drawers on the right. In Elfa terms that needs:
- One top track cut to just under 72 inches.
- Four or five hanging standards, spaced to match your shelf widths.
- Two hanging rods with brackets for the double-hang section, one for the long-hang section.
- A long shelf across the top and two or three shelves on the right.
- A drawer frame with three or four mesh drawers under the right-hand shelves.
Items 1 to 4 make up a modest bill. Item 5 can come close to doubling it. If the drawers push you over budget, build the closet without them and add a freestanding closet drawer unit now, then swap in Elfa drawers during a later sale. Sketch the layout with your real measurements in our free closet design tool before you price it.
Build quality
Elfa standards, brackets and wire shelves are epoxy-coated steel. Owners consistently describe the system as solid once installed, and the parts are designed as one family, so brackets seat firmly and shelves sit level. Common points from owner reviews:
- Strong when the track is in studs. Most complaints about sagging come back to the top track not being fixed into studs or rated anchors.
- Wire shelves leave lines. Ventilated shelves can mark soft knits. Solid shelves or clear wire shelf liners fix that.
- Mesh drawers show their contents. That is handy for finding things and less tidy-looking than solid fronts. Décor+ fronts cover them.
- Parts last. Because nothing is glued or screwed together below the track, the parts survive being taken down and put back up, which matters if you move.
The 10-year guarantee
Elfa’s own site describes a 10-year guarantee from the date of purchase. It covers material defects under normal home use and functional defects on moving parts such as drawer runners, wheels and pull-out products. Damage from misuse or outside causes is excluded, and claims go through the store where you bought it, with your receipt. Keep the receipt or order email, and confirm the current terms with The Container Store, since retailer policies can add to or differ from the maker’s.
Designing an Elfa closet
You can design online or with The Container Store’s design staff, in a store or by appointment, and the design help is free. A designer is useful for walk-ins with corners, sloped ceilings or very short walls, where it is easy to get standard spacing wrong.
Whichever route you choose, go in with good numbers:
- Measure each wall at the top, middle and bottom, and note the smallest width. Our guide on how to measure your closet walks through it.
- Count your clothes by type: long-hang, short-hang, folded, shoes. That decides how many inches of rod you need versus shelves and drawers.
- Decide rod heights before you lock in shelf positions. Our closet rod height chart has the standard numbers for single and double hanging.
- For a reach-in, check the door opening: the drawer frame needs to fit behind the door return and still let drawers open.
Installing Elfa yourself
Elfa is one of the easier systems to install, because only one part goes into the wall. The job comes down to getting the top track level and secure:
- Empty the closet and remove any old shelf and rod.
- Mark the track height and find the studs with a stud finder.
- Draw a level line with a laser level and screw the track into the studs, using the right anchors between studs.
- Hang the standards, click in the brackets and lay the shelves, rods and drawer frames.
Owners often report a reach-in taking an afternoon. The Container Store will also cut the track to length for you, which saves the hardest cut. If you would rather not drill, paid installation is available, though it adds noticeably to the total.

Pros and cons
Pros
- Changes in minutes: move shelves, add rods, swap shelves for drawers without tools
- Only the top track goes into the wall, so fewer holes and an easier install
- Large range of parts for closets, pantries, laundry rooms and garages
- Free design help and a 10-year guarantee
- Comes down cleanly if you move
Cons
- Expensive next to wire kits, especially with drawers and Décor+ finishes

- Wire shelves need liners for small items and soft knits
- Older Décor parts were discontinued, so check compatibility before extending an old closet
Who Elfa suits, and who should skip it
Best for: homeowners staying put for years, shared closets, kids’ closets that need to change as they grow, and anyone who wants drawers inside the closet instead of a dresser in the bedroom.
- Buy Elfa if you want a system you can rearrange often, value a guarantee and are willing to wait for a sale.
- Look at ClosetMaid ShelfTrack if you want the same track idea for much less and can live without real drawers. Our Elfa vs ClosetMaid comparison and ShelfTrack review cover that trade-off.
- Look at IKEA PAX if there is no closet at all, or you want doors. See IKEA PAX vs Elfa.
- Look at laminate systems if you want a built-in furniture look. Our wire vs laminate vs wood guide and affordable closet systems list options.
- Renting? Elfa still needs a track screwed into the wall. Ask your landlord first, or choose a freestanding system.
FAQ
Is the Elfa closet system worth it?
It is worth it if you will keep the closet for years, want drawers in it or expect to change the layout often. For a single shelf and rod in a reach-in, a basic wire kit does the same job for far less.
How much does an Elfa closet cost?
It depends on wall length, drawers and finishes. Published listings for pre-designed Elfa closets have ranged from roughly $400 to over $3,000. Sales of around 30% to 35% off are common, so price your design during one.
Who makes Elfa?
Elfa is a Swedish storage brand. In the US it is sold through The Container Store, which has carried it since 1978.
Can you install Elfa yourself?
Yes. Only the top track is screwed to the wall; everything else hangs from it. You need a drill, a level, a stud finder and the right anchors. Paid installation is also available.
Does Elfa come with a warranty?
Elfa describes a 10-year guarantee covering material defects and moving parts under normal home use. Claims go through the store you bought from, so keep your receipt.
What is the difference between Elfa Classic and Décor+?
They share the same track and standards. Classic uses white or platinum steel with wire or solid shelves and mesh drawers. Décor+ adds wood-look shelves, solid drawer fronts, trim and hardware finishes for a more finished look, at a higher price.
Can you buy Elfa on Amazon?
Elfa is sold mainly by The Container Store. Listings elsewhere are usually resellers, so check the seller and whether the guarantee still applies.
The bottom line
Elfa is a well-built, flexible closet system that is easy to install and easy to change, with a real guarantee behind it. You pay for that, mostly in drawers and finishes. If you plan to stay, design it first, buy during a sale and start with the parts you need now; the system is made to grow later. If you mainly want low cost, ShelfTrack or a basic wire kit will serve you better, and if you have no closet, look at wardrobes instead.
