IKEA PAX and Elfa from The Container Store come up in almost every closet makeover conversation. Both are modular, both can be designed online, and both can be installed yourself. PAX is a set of wardrobe cabinets, though, and Elfa is a wall-mounted track system. That difference decides where you can use each one, how it looks, how you install it and what happens when you move.

The comparison below is based on each brand’s published product information and common customer experience. Neither company sponsors ClosetBlueprint.

The short answer

IKEA PAX makes more sense if you need closet storage in a room without a real closet, if you want doors, or if budget is your top priority. Elfa is the better pick for outfitting an existing closet with a system you can rearrange in minutes, now and for years.

How each system works

IKEA PAX: wardrobes you customize

PAX starts with wardrobe frames in a few fixed widths, depths and heights. You fill each frame with interior fittings from IKEA’s KOMPLEMENT range (shelves, rods, drawers, pull-out trays, shoe shelves, baskets) and add doors if you want them. Each frame is a self-contained cabinet, so PAX can create a “closet” on any wall in a bedroom, loft or basement.

Elfa: a track system for your closet walls

Elfa uses a horizontal top track screwed into the wall. Vertical standards hang from that track, and shelves, drawers, rods and baskets clip onto brackets on the standards. Apart from optional drawer units, nothing stands on the floor. You get open storage that can be reconfigured without tools, in ventilated wire, solid shelving or wood-look finishes.

Where you can use them

The space you have often decides the choice for you.

  • If you have no closet at all, PAX is the clear choice. It creates enclosed storage from scratch, and the doors keep it looking tidy.
  • Elfa is designed for an existing reach-in or walk-in closet. It uses the full wall height and width, including awkward corners, and makes the most of shallow spaces where cabinet depth would eat into floor space.
  • In a shallow reach-in closet, measure carefully. PAX frames add their own depth, and if they do not fit comfortably with the doors closed, a wall-mounted system is usually the better fit. See how to measure your closet. Our reach-in closet guide also covers IKEA’s wall-mounted BOAXEL.

Design and planning

IKEA’s online PAX planner lets you choose frames, fittings and doors, and shows the price and parts list. Elfa has an online designer too, and The Container Store also offers design help, which is useful if you want a second opinion on a tricky layout.

With PAX you plan around fixed frame sizes. With Elfa you plan around your actual wall lengths, since the top track can be cut to fit.

Installation

PAX takes time. Each frame has to be assembled, stood up and anchored to the wall, then fitted with interiors and doors. Two people can manage it, but plan for a full day or more for a large wardrobe wall. IKEA also offers paid assembly in many areas.

For Elfa, the main job is getting a level top track securely fastened to the wall. After that, the standards hang in place and components clip in quickly. The Container Store also offers paid installation.

Flexibility

Elfa is much easier to change. Raising a shelf, adding a second rod for double hanging or swapping shelves for drawers usually takes minutes and no tools. That suits kids’ closets, shared closets and anyone whose wardrobe changes with the seasons. Our ideas for kids’ closets go through each age.

PAX interiors can be rearranged too, but it takes more work, and the frames themselves stay fixed once installed.

Durability and moving

PAX frames are particleboard. They are sturdy once assembled and anchored, but they are heavy, and repeated disassembly can loosen joints. Elfa’s steel components and shelving come apart cleanly, so it is often the better long-term choice if you expect to move.

Cost

PAX is generally the cheaper way to get a lot of enclosed storage, especially if you keep the interiors simple. Elfa costs more, particularly once you add drawers and premium wood-look finishes, though The Container Store regularly runs sales on Elfa. In either system, drawers and doors are what push the price up.

Which one should you buy?

  • Your room has no built-in closet.
  • You want doors to hide everything.
  • You want the lowest cost for a lot of storage.

  • You are upgrading an existing closet.
  • You want to rearrange easily as your needs change.
  • You might move and want to take the system with you.

FAQ

Can I put PAX inside a closet?

Sometimes. It works in deeper walk-in closets, but in many reach-in closets the frame depth and door swing make it awkward, and a wall-mounted system usually uses that space better.

Is Elfa worth the higher price?

It is if you value flexibility and plan to keep the system for many years or through a move. If you want enclosed storage on a tight budget, PAX is better value.

Can I mix PAX or Elfa with cheaper organizers?

Yes. Slim hangers, shelf dividers, bins and a closet light work with either system and cost little. See our picks for closet organizers under $100.

Which one is better for a walk-in closet?

Both can work. Elfa makes the most of every wall in an open walk-in, while PAX gives a furniture look with doors. Our walk-in closet ideas guide covers layouts for both approaches.

The bottom line

Go with IKEA PAX when you need closet storage where none exists, want doors or need to keep costs down. Go with Elfa when you want an existing closet to hold more and stay easy to rearrange for years.
